2024 Annual Meeting of the Northwest Horn Society Sunday, April 14, 2024
9:00 AM PT

Washington State University

1. Call to Order: President Jeffrey Snedeker called the meeting to order at 9:01 am.

2. Approval of 2023 AGM Minutes: Minutes were approved by vote of the members present.

3. Treasurer’s Report (Jason Johnston: This was submitted via email in advance of the meeting. No further report presented, as Jason was ill.)
     NWHS funds as of 4/9/24
     PayPal: $3021.47 (will be transferred over soon)
     General Fund: $1180.16
     Savings: $6546.41


4. Membership Report: No report presented, as Jason Johnston was ill.

5. Scholarship Report (Martin King): 2024 Student Scholarships awarded to Daniel Chausse, Minuet Liao, Ginger Heath.

6. Communications and Outreach Report
     Liz Schmidt via Zoom reported on progress with social media, website, future newsletter. Showed Symposium Guide as sample of newsletters to come.


     Jeff Snedeker reported on the Avocational players meeting: 6 people attended, Jeff hosted; they asked for more communication opportunities, sharing information; continue in the future.

7. Student Representative Report (Ben Birmingham): Ben reported on a very successful student meeting! Student numbers: 44 University, 20 high school. Lots of competitors in the various contests (especially high school!). Jeff Snedeker thanked Ben for all of his work as student representative to the board. Ben was proactive, involved in our social media, and provided legitimacy as the student voice to the board.

8. New Business
     Elections: Treasurer/Membership: Jason Johnston was nominated to continue in the position. Mike Simpson moved, Ben Birmingham seconded to accept Jason’s nomination, members voted to approve.


      At-Large Representative: Lennox Morey was nominated to continue in this position. Martin King moved, Mike Simpson seconded to accept Lennox's nomination; members present voted to approve.

      Student Representative: Beaumont Fry nominated Jordyn Gribble for the position. Mike Simpson moved, Martin King seconded to accept the nomination; members present voted to approve.

       Symposium Report (Martin King): Martin gave thanks to all, and especially thanked our vendors, Wichita Band Instruments, Ted Brown Music, Hoffman Music, chamber Music Marysville, Gina Gillie and Cantesanu Horns. Dr. King also thanked our advertisers: Cimmaron Music Press, Interlochen Arts Academy, Wavefront Music, Kendall Betts Horn Camp, and WSU School of Music. He also recognized grant providers, WSU Arts and Humanities, as well as the International Horn Society. Martin noted that we had 23 High School, 49 University students; Avocational hornists 11; 11 Chaperones for high schoolers; 11 Professionals; 8 Vendors for a total of 113. There were 12 participants in the High School Solo Contest, and 12 participants in the University Solo Contest.

9.  Announcements

     Jeff Snedeker reported that next year’s Symposium will take place at the University of Oregon, hosted by Leander Star. It will take place April 25-27, 2025, with guest artists John Turman (University of Washington, Seattle Symphony), Danielle Kuhlmann (Seattle Symphony), and the LGBTUBENQUINTET.

     Darren Tanner brought up that next year’s symposium is the 30th anniversary of the Northwest Horn Symposium.

     Ben Birmingham voiced that in future symposia, chamber music groups should be encouraged.

     There was a discussion about encouraging diversity in the Northwest Horn Society; Lennox Morey stated that as a nonbinary person on the board, they felt welcome, and Liz Schmidt asked that if members had ideas about more representation, they should feel encouraged to bombard us with them.

10. Adjournment: Martin King moved, Ben Birmingham seconded that we adjourn. Meeting adjourned at 9:51 a.m. PT.
